Biography
Different musical projects as leader or sideman. TOINE THYS started music at an early age with clarinet.
He graduated his music studies with the title of ‘Master of Music’ in 2002 in the Netherlands, in John Ruocco and Ferdinand Povel’s classes.
On tenor, soprano and alt saxophones, he’s a energetic and intense player, with a warm, full tone, and has a versatile approach to both standards and compositions.
Toine enjoys also paying clarinet and bass clarinet in different contexts. Toine is very concerned with composition,
and writes with consistency for several projects.
Toine Thys is actually performing in the TOINE THYS TRIO with the amazing Arno Krijger (NL) on Hammond organ and Joost van Schaik (NL), the drummer of Philip Catherine and Toots Thielemans. They first CD out in October 2010 (Bartok Label).
His international project, TAKE THE DUCK, is a jazz quartet led together with austrian trumpet player Daniel Nösig, irish drummer Sean Carpio, and Slovenian bassist Robert Jukic. They have been touring extensively through Eastern and Western Europe, as well as Africa and South America. After 3 CDs, they are working on some new music for 2011.
His group RACKHAM features and Benjamin Clément (guitar), Eric Bribosia (keys) Nathan Wouters (bass) Steven Cassiers (drums).
This is a project combining different influences, with high energy, joyful playing and refined harmonies.They first CD, “JUANITA K”, was acclaimed by the press (2007).
New LP coming out in fall 2011.
BLOODY MARY is the result of the meeting with french drummer Anne Paceo. They play in quartet with pianist Pascal Mohy, and bassist Joan Eche-Puig, and share their time between France and Belgium.
As a sideman, he is playing with Daniel Jodocy, Chris Joris Duet/Trio/Quartet, Manolo Cabras, Erik Vermeulen, and many others projects. Toine played and recorded also with Dre Pallemaerts, Joost van Schaaik, Paolino della Porta, Howard Curtis, Ben Monder, ZOPHOP HOP, Vinz, Teuk Henri, Andrew D’Angelo, ReggieWashington, Christian Salfellner, Baba Sissoko, Philip Harper, Sal La Rocca, and followed workshops with a.o. Joe Lovano, Seamus Blake, Tony Malaby, John Ellis,Chris Potter, Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Liebman…
He won a scholarship from the dutch foundation Prins Bernhardt, and spent months in New York. He toured in many countries, including South and NorthAmerica, Turkey, France, Tchequia, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Vietnam, Morocco, etc..
